Being a veteran is a noble service to perform for your country. Receiving some type of reward or benefits for this service is the least that is owed to the men and women who are retired veterans or are still presently on active duty. If you have decided to make California your home state, you should know a little about what the state has to offer veterans and what types of discounted California auto insurance for veterans you can expect.

What the State Offers  Discounted California Auto Insurance for Veterans

Because policies within a state can change quickly, it is a good idea to verify any of this information before attempting to obtain your driver’s license and registration. At this time, however, the state of California does extend some benefits for either retired veterans, those who have received a Medal of Honor, disabled veterans and American ex-prisoners of war. For example, you may be able to take advantage of:

By completing and filing certain documentation, you may be eligible for free registration of one vehicle. This state benefit waives the costs of registering a vehicle and also provides the license plates at no additional charge. This can include a passenger motor vehicle, motorcycle or commercial motor vehicle that falls below the maximum weight limit requirements.

Certain members of the military who meet specified requirements may also be eligible for a free license plate. These eligible veterans include those who have received a Purple Heart Medal, former POWs or Prisoners of War, survivors of Pearl Harbor and other types of military veterans. To find out if you meet the criteria, check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles for California.

Those who have been classified as Disabled Veterans may also be able to receive a free license plate in the state of California. If you meet certain guidelines as set forth by the state of California, you may also be able to get your registration fees and license plate for “Disabled Veterans” paid. If you are unsure if you are up for consideration, consult with someone from the DMV or check with the California state government website for further details.

You may also be able to get discounted California auto insurance for veterans. Though this is not through the state there are a high number of car insurance policy providers who have made it a point to honor veterans by offering this type of affordable policy coverage. The best thing you can do is compare rates from different auto insurance companies and find which one offers the best rates for the best coverage to meet your individual needs.

Getting the Coverage You Need

The important part of getting the discounted California auto insurance for veterans you need is to know what coverage is required for you. This includes two things:

Meeting the California state requirements for insurance. At this time, California is not one of the states that requires drivers to carry “no fault” insurance. Find out what the minimum state requirements are so you can manage to meet those to be able to drive legally. Whether you would like to add more to that is your own choice.

If you are financing a vehicle, be sure to meet the minimum requirements as set in place by your lending company. Failure to do so can leave you with gaps that could lead to you being financially and legally responsible for damage and details of accidents in which you are deemed at fault. Not to mention your lending company may tack on their own insurance to fill in those gaps, insurance with premiums that can run as high as a car payment.

Aside from that, the amount of California auto insurance for veterans you want is for you to decide as a driver and a consumer. On the one hand, you do not want to have to spend more than you need to for coverage you don’t want. On the other hand trimming your policy too much in order to save a few dollars off the premium each month is not going to do you any good.

In the event that you do have to pay something out of pocket as the result of an accident, you could easily be paying much more than you can afford. In the long run, it is a better idea to have a little more auto insurance than you think you need.

Get protected today by using just your zip code to get free discounted California auto insurance for veterans quotes.
