What does PIP cover?
PIP car insurance pays bodily injury costs such as hospital bills. But what exactly does personal injury protection cover? Let’s look at the list below:
- Medical/hospital expenses. Pays for the medical and hospital bills of you and your passengers after an accident (it can also cover a health insurance deductible)
- Lost wages. This is described as the money and hours you missed as a result of an accident
- Child care. Child care is one of the essential services that is covered by personal injury insurance
- Funeral expenses. PIP insurance covers funeral expenses for you or other passengers
- Cleaning. If you have been disabled by a car accident, PIP covers cleaning expenses
- Legal fees. Specific legal charges are covered under personal injury protection
- Survivors’ loss. The insurance company replaces the sudden of lost income for your family if you pass away from an accident
There is a limit to how much your car insurance company will cover. For example, Florida’s PIP coverage limit is $10,000. You can request more if you think the minimum requirement is not enough.
States that do not have a specific requirement also carry a $10,000 limit. But to get coverage after an accident, you will need to pay a deductible. Some personal injury insurance deductibles are as high as $1,000.
How much PIP coverage should I get?
We recommend getting $10,000 in personal injury protection coverage. Your PIP insurance can supplement your health insurance, and it even provides coverage for health insurance deductibles.
What does PIP not cover?
Just the name “personal injury protection” sounds like it covers just about anything that liability auto insurance will not cover. However, personal injury protection does not extend coverage to property damage. In other words, PIP insurance will not pay for damage to your vehicle.
Personal injury protection does not pay for injuries of the no-fault driver when you are at fault in a car accident. Also, PIP coverage will not cover damage to another driver’s car. Your liability insurance coverage pays for damage to a no-fault driver’s vehicle.
You will need collision auto insurance if you want coverage for your vehicle regardless of fault. Add comprehensive insurance to get coverage for damage not caused by a collision.
How much does personal Injury protection cost?
PIP insurance is 16.3% of your full coverage auto insurance. According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), full coverage car insurance is $90 a month. Therefore, PIP coverage should be about $15 per month on average.
So what is personal injury protection like for each state in the nation? Let’s examine the estimates.

Do deductibles affect personal injury protection costs?
Yes, they do. Higher deductibles produce cheaper rates, but they demand costly out-of-pocket expenses. If you manage more expensive rates, get a lower deductible.

How do I file a personal injury protection claim?
You can file a PIP coverage claim like any car insurance claim. After you have been in an accident, contact your auto insurance company and let them know you want to file a PIP insurance claim.
Once you have your insurance representative or agent on the phone, give them your name and policy number. Tell the representative details while you wait for a law enforcement officer to provide you with a police report.
You will have a chance to file a report by email or phone. Be prepared to send information through fax, email, or by mail.
Do I need PIP coverage if I have health insurance?
Yes, you do.
PIP insurance can supplement car insurance coverage, while health insurance ensures that you maintain your health outside of motor vehicle incidents.
Medical and hospital bills are expensive, and health insurance policies can bring down those costly services by hundreds of dollars, but PIP can offset these costs further and even cover your health insurance deductible.
What’s the difference between medical payments and personal injury protection?
Medical payments, or MedPay, is insurance coverage that pays for medical bills, such as x-rays, co-pays, and other procedures. PIP coverage also pays for medical bills, but it covers different areas as well, such as child care and lost wages.

MedPay will not cover impacts of your injury, but only the injury or medical costs directly. Both insurance types can be added to your auto insurance policy, however, MedPay is much cheaper than PIP coverage.
